Aftercare and Removal
Depending on individual circumstances, nail prosthetics can be worn for several months. During this time, the natural nail regrows, pushing the artificial nail forward. If it needs to be shortened, you should file it using diamond or
glass files. Cutting is not recommended, as the artificial
nail may break. Nail polish remover can be used,
as UNGUISAN® is not dissolved, weakened, or damaged.
After showering or bathing, the patient must ensure that all hollow spaces under the nail are thoroughly dried. For this purpose, the use of a hair dryer can be recommended. In addition, it is advisable to disinfect the artificial nail regularly (e.g., with UNGUISAN® nail care concentrate).
If it is necessary to remove the nail prosthesis,
it must be carefully filed down.
Nail prosthetics is a procedure for manufacturing artificial
toenails and fingernails.
It was developed by Josef Greppmayr (1901-1977) back in the middle of the last century and patented in 1954. Thanks to continuous further development and refinement of the method, it represents
what is probably the most versatile and sophisticated form of
nail replacement today.
Nail prosthetics is inextricably linked to the resin "Unguisan®".
This name is composed of the Latin words "unguis" (=nail) and "sanus" (=healthy) and thus reflects the treatment goal: namely to restore the shape and function of the entire nail organ.
Unguisan® is a 2-component synthetic resin consisting of powder
and liquid hardener. Once mixed, a cross-linking process (polymerization) lasting several minutes begins immediately, during which the user can give the synthetic material an individual shape. An artificial nail is created that replicates the color, shape, and texture of natural nail substance.
It bonds permanently and gently with the natural nail,
thus forming the foundation for the techniques described here.
A variety of nail problems can be treated with Unguisan®,
distinguishing between chronic nail damage and
temporary deformities.
Generally speaking, a residual nail must be present
in order to attach the artificial nail permanently.
Common indications include, for example:
· Partial replacement of the nail plate
· Condition following traumatic loss of the nail plate
· Onychorrhexis (longitudinal splitting)
· Onychoschisis (layered chipping/lamellar splitting of the nail plate)
· Onychogryphosis (claw-like curvature and thickening
of the nail)
· Aesthetic improvements of the appearance
Nail prosthetics must not be used on open wounds or other injuries to the nail bed. In cases of mycoses of the skin and nails, the decision regarding nail prosthetic measures must be made on an individual basis.
In order to be able to apply this fascinating working technique, you only need—in addition to your podiatry knowledge and manual dexterity—the Unguisan starter set, which contains all the required materials and instruments.
Following the instructions below, you will soon be able to offer a significant expansion of your treatment spectrum.
Depending on the situation, two fundamental procedural methods are available to you in nail prosthetics with UNGUISAN®. In both
cases, the following points must be observed before starting treatment:
· The nail area to be treated must be free of loose or
damaged nail parts and calloused skin.
· Ensure that the residual nail and nail bed are dry,
free of grease, and clean.
· In addition, adequate level compensation should be ensured in the area
of the artificial nail. Dry tamponades and adhesive films have proven to be very effective here.
